Hot Heading Services – Precision Manufacturing at G-Fast
Hot Forging is used to manufacture larger fasteners sizes where it is not practical to manufacture on cold-heading equipment. Similar properties to cold-heading and also delivering exceptional strength achieved through the forming process by maintaining the raw material grain flow and structure. G-Fast knows when hot heading should be the selected as the manufacturing method to best deliver the required performance characteristics combined with the most economical choice for the job. Hot heading represents a critical manufacturing solution for high-performance applications.

Hot Heading Capabilities
G-Fast offers comprehensive hot heading solutions with superior specifications:
- Size Range: Components from 1/4″ diameters to large structural elements up to 3” diameter.
- Temperature Control: Precise heating from 700°C to 1,200°C depending on material requirements
- Material Compatibility: Carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steels, titanium, and exotic high-temperature alloys
- Secondary Operations Available: Heat treatment, machining, drilling, tapping, grinding, and specialized finishing

What is Hot Heading?
Today, hot heading is an advanced manufacturing process but its origins trace back to the traditional Blacksmith Shop where now the metal is heated using an induction coil. Heated to red-hot before transferring to a heavy-duty piece of equipment where the hot metal is formed using dies and hammers to achieve desired shapes, this process maintains the metal’s microstructure and grain flow, enhancing properties such as strength, and toughness. These temperatures do not destroy the metallurgical features of the considered alloy and may be heat treated or annealed to achieve the desired grade as required by the governing specification. Cut or rolled threads along with secondary machining is utilized to achieve required close tolerances callouts, surface finishing, head or shank drilling as required by the job. Plain finished parts, mechanical and electroplated Zinc, Hot Dip Galvanizing are some of the most common plating required.
Our Hot Heading Process
G-Fast’s state of the art hot heading process follows these critical steps:
- Material Preparation: High-quality metal stock is precisely heated to optimal forging temperatures using advanced induction heating systems.
- Controlled Heating: The end of the round bar is heated via an induction process and placed into the upsetter where a plunger compresses the heated steel to form the head.
- Progressive Forming: Hot metal is shaped through controlled compression forces, dramatically improving grain structure and material properties.
- Secondary Machining: Close tolerance dimensions are perfected along with threading are performed on the completed forged blank.
- Quality Control: In process inspection ensures dimensional accuracy and material integrity while components cool under controlled conditions.
Key Advantages of G-Fast Hot Heading
- Superior Material Properties
Compared to a machined component, hot heading dramatically enhances mechanical properties including tensile strength, yield strength, fatigue resistance, and impact toughness through controlled grain refinement and metallurgical transformation.
- Complex Shape Capability
Similar to cold-heading, high-temperature hot forming enables production of larger sized geometries impossible through cold forming, including large cross-sectional upsetting, intricate shapes and features.
