Dowel pins are precision locating components-not general-purpose fasteners.

Dowel pins and taper pins are hardened, ground components used for precise alignment, positive component location, and repeatable registration in tooling, dies, fixtures, and mechanical assemblies. Their defining characteristic is tight dimensional control, manufactured with extremely close tolerances on diameter and ground surface finish to enable interference-fit or slip-fit installation with sub-thousandth repeatability.

  • Description
  • Specifications

At G-Fast, dowel and taper pins are manufactured strictly to customer prints or verified specifications. Production methods are selected based on size, material, tolerance, and quantity to ensure optimal dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and material properties. Functional Use

  • Dowel Pins - Precision ground cylindrical pins used for accurate alignment and location in reamed or precision-drilled holes.
  • Taper Pins - Pins with a standard 1:48 taper providing a self-locking wedging action for alignment and retention without secondary hardware.

Manufacturing Capabilities

Cold forming or CNC machining followed by centerless grinding to final tolerance.

  • Diameter tolerances: h6 standard; tighter available
  • Surface finish: Ra 8-16 microinch typical
  • Straightness: 0.0002" per inch or better

Secondary operations include heat treatment, passivation, coating, and custom feature integration.

How Dowel Pins Are Manufactured

  • Centerless Grinding - Achieves final diameter tolerance and surface finish
  • Cold Forming / Machining - Selected based on geometry, material, and quantity
  • Heat Treatment - Provides hardness and wear resistance for long-term alignment performance Materials & Finishes Materials include alloy steel (52100, 4140), stainless steel (303, 304, 316, 440C), tool steels (A2, D2), titanium Grade 5, Inconel 625, and specialty alloys.

Finishes include passivation, black oxide, zinc plating, and precision ground surfaces. Standards & Compliance ASME B18.8.2, ISO 8734/8735, DIN 6325/7979, and customer proprietary drawings.

Available documentation includes CMTRs, dimensional inspection reports, hardness certification, and DFARS compliance where required. Dowel Pins in Automation & Precision Systems Used in applications where repeatable positioning and alignment are critical:

  • CNC fixture plates and modular tooling systems
  • Robotic alignment and end-of-arm tooling
  • Conveyor indexing and positioning systems
  • Precision assembly and inspection fixtures

We review for manufacturability and may suggest tolerance, material, or process improvements. All changes require customer engineering approval prior to production.
